Originally from Butte, Montana, home of the world's largest Superfund site and some of the worst environmental damage in the West, Bart has been concerned about environmental issues since the first time he saw the Berkley Pit.
A journalism degree from Eastern Washington University was a catalyst for allowing Bart an opportunity to spread his concerns and work towards outreach and solutions. In 2007 he co-founded an environmental issues blog, fittingly enough called
Down To Earth (www.dtenw.com/blogs/down-earth). Then in August of 2010 he accepted a position as the
Spokane Riverkeeper where he works to preserve and protect the Spokane River. In addition to that he is involved in countless other environmental and social justice causes as well as other progressive and organizing endeavors. Bart is a tireless advocate for environmental protection and conservation, and ranks Spokane River, land control and resources preservation issues as his biggest concerns. He is also constantly mystified about climate change deniers and has been known to verbally spare with them in the comments section on several of Spokane's best blogs.
Being from Montana has taught him the importance of land rights and conservation and proudly claims the
Big Hole Valley of southwest Montana as the most beautiful area in the world, but shhh, don't tell anyone else. Bart is inspired by Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, Gifford Pinchot, Ansel Adams and Al Gore, and thinks Gandhi said it best, "There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed."
